A bit of history
Aït Ben Haddou was a stop for the caravans heading up from the Sahara to Marrakech, and the Ounila valley was their way through the Atlas. In the early 20th century the Glaoui family controlled that route from Telouet and built kasbahs along it, such as Taourirt. Ouarzazate as a town was born in 1928, when the French set up a military post here. Film arrived in the sixties with Lawrence of Arabia, and since then shoots have provided work for half the district.
Common mistakes and scams
Nothing serious, but worth knowing before you arrive so you don't overpay.
Day trips from Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate sits where three roads meet, which is why it works well as a base for day trips.
How to get there
Practical tips
At the ksar you'll be offered a guide. You don't need one to climb up, but a local guide will open houses you wouldn't see on your own; agree the price first. Take out cash in Ouarzazate: there's no ATM in Aït Ben Haddou. Wear shoes with proper soles, because the climb is on loose earth, and bring a scarf or cap. For tipping and exchange, see money and tipping in Morocco.

Frequently asked questions about Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate
Can you visit Aït Ben Haddou in a day from Marrakech?
Yes. You leave around 7:30 and get back at nightfall, with about four hours on the road each way. It is a long day but a very common one. If you are carrying on to the desert, it is better to sleep there and continue the next day.
Do you have to pay to enter Aït Ben Haddou?
As of 2026 there is no general entry ticket for walking round the ksar, but some houses you can visit inside ask for a small amount. Bring coins and small notes. Check before you travel, because these conditions change.
What is the difference between Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate?
Aït Ben Haddou is the historic ksar, in a small village by the river. Ouarzazate is a town about 30 kilometres away, with more hotels, the film studios and the Taourirt kasbah. Nearly all tours stop at both.
Is the Tizi n'Tichka road dangerous?
It isn't dangerous with a driver who knows it, but it is slow: it has a lot of bends, lorries and roadworks on some stretches. We avoid driving it at night. In winter it can be closed for a few hours because of snow.
Where is it better to sleep, Aït Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate?
To see the ksar in good light and without groups, in Aït Ben Haddou, at the guesthouses opposite. Ouarzazate is more practical if you arrive late or need an ATM, a pharmacy or a wider choice of hotels.
