Who it's for
It suits you if…
You came into Morocco through Fez or the north (Tangier, Chefchaouen) and you're finishing in Marrakech. Instead of the train or a domestic flight, you travel down through the south with the desert in between.
Pick something else if…
You'd rather go back to Fez after the desert. That's what the 3-day trip from Fez to Merzouga is for.

You can book this route either way, on this same page.
Private
A vehicle and driver just for you: you choose the start time and the stops. The price per person drops the more of you there are.
Small group
A seat in a shared minibus with other travellers on the same itinerary. Daily departures; the price is the same even if you travel alone.
Before you book
The first day really is long. The car is private and we stop whenever you need to. It costs a little more than a round trip because the car has to go back to Fez.
It's our Marrakech to Fez desert tour in reverse, and we prefer it this way: you finish with Aït Ben Haddou and the High Atlas, the most photogenic part of the route. There are our guides to Marrakech and Fez, or message us.
Driving hours and overnight stops
On Standard, a simple desert camp and a comfortable hotel in the Dades; on Superior, a tent with a private bathroom and a nicer hotel.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga: camel ride and camp
We leave your riad in Fez at around 7:30 and climb into the Middle Atlas. We stop in Ifrane and in the cedars near Azrou, where the Barbary macaques often come out. We continue across the plateau to Midelt, an apple-growing town at the foot of Jbel Ayachi, for lunch.
In the afternoon we drop into the Ziz Valley, with viewpoints over the canyon and the palm grove, and pass through Errachidia and Erfoud to Merzouga. At the foot of Erg Chebbi you get on a camel and cross the dunes as the sun sets. At the camp there is mint tea, dinner and Berber music. Night in a tent. About 8 or 9 hours on the road with stops, the longest day.
Day 2: Sunrise in Erg Chebbi – Rissani – Tinejdad – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley
We climb a dune to watch the sunrise and ride back to Merzouga by camel or 4x4 for breakfast. We pass through Rissani, the old capital of the Tafilalet, and head west along the oasis route between Erfoud and Tinejdad, where you can still see the wells of the old underground irrigation channels.
At Tinghir we enter the Todra Gorge, a canyon with almost vertical walls, and walk beside the river. In the afternoon we continue to Boumalne and drive up into the Dades Valley on a road full of bends, between rock formations. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in the valley. About 5 hours of driving spread over the day.
Day 3: Dades Valley – Valley of Roses – Skoura – Aït Ben Haddou – Marrakech
After breakfast we drive down the Valley of Roses. In Kalaat M'Gouna you can visit a rose water cooperative, with no obligation to buy. We continue to the Skoura palm grove, with earthen kasbahs among the palms, and pass through Ouarzazate, the film city, to Aït Ben Haddou.
We walk up through the ksar to the granary at the top of the hill, which looks over the Ounila river valley. After lunch we cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka, with its bends and Berber villages, and come down to Marrakech. You reach your accommodation at nightfall, after about 7 or 8 hours on the road with stops.

Is it better to go from Fez to Marrakech or from Marrakech to Fez?
The scenery is the same, so what decides it is where you enter and leave Morocco. If you arrive through Fez or the north, this is the logical route. In this direction the longest day, Fez to Merzouga, comes first, when you are most rested, and you finish with Aït Ben Haddou.
Can I do this route in four or five days?
Yes, and if you have the time we recommend it. In four days we usually add another night in the desert or a night in Ouarzazate or Aït Ben Haddou. In five we include Zagora and the Draa Valley via the N'kob road. Ask us for the extended itinerary; the price depends on how many of you travel and on the option you pick, Standard or Superior.
What luggage should I bring?
Your suitcase stays in the car for the whole trip. For the night in the desert, pack a small backpack with the essentials: warm clothes, a toothbrush, a torch or head torch, a charger and some water. The large suitcase is stored somewhere safe in Merzouga.
