Who it's for
It suits you if…
You're already in Fez and want to add the north without relying on buses or timetables. It works if you have one or two free days between other legs of your trip.
- Couples and friends
- Photography in early-morning and late-afternoon light
- Children, because the car is private and we stop whenever needed
Pick something else if…
You want more days in the north. We have cultural tours and imperial cities tours.

Chefchaouen is in the mountains and the nights are cool even in spring and autumn, so bring a light jacket. The medina is all steps and slopes: comfortable shoes are better than sandals.
If you're carrying on to Tangier, about 2 hours away, or taking the ferry to Spain, we change the second day and drop you there. There's our Chefchaouen guide, and for specific questions, message us through the contact page.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Fez – Rif Mountains – Chefchaouen
We pick you up in the morning from your riad or hotel in Fez, at whatever time suits you. We head north through olive trees and wheat fields. The drive takes between 3½ and 4 hours. The last stretch, once you're in the Rif, is full of bends: if you get car sick, tell us and you can sit in the front.
We arrive around midday or early afternoon. You drop off your luggage and wander around Outa el Hammam square, the kasbah and the blue streets. In the late afternoon, walk up to the Spanish Mosque, about 30 minutes uphill, to see the whole town at sunset. Dinner is at your own choice in the medina.
Day 2: Chefchaouen at dawn – Return to Fez
Go out early. First thing in the morning the streets are quiet, residents are sweeping their doorsteps and you can take photos without people in the way. If you want to photograph someone, ask first; many people would rather you didn't.
After breakfast the morning is yours. You can walk to the Ras el Ma spring, where locals wash their clothes, or buy wool blankets and local goat's cheese. In the early afternoon we leave for Fez and arrive in the late afternoon. If you prefer, we take you to Tangier, about 2 hours away, or to the port if you're continuing by ferry to Spain.

Leave a reviewFrequently asked questions
Is it worth staying the night in Chefchaouen rather than going there and back in a day?
Yes, if you have the time. The day trip from Fez means around 7 or 8 hours on the road and leaves you three or four hours in the town, right when it's busiest. Staying the night, you see the medina at sunset and at dawn, which are its best hours, and the trip is much less tiring.
Can we end the trip in Tangier?
Yes. Many travellers returning to Spain by sea prefer to finish in Tangier. Chefchaouen is about 2 hours by road from the city and a little more from the port of Tanger Med. Tell us your ferry time and we'll set the departure so you arrive with time to spare.
Do I need to hire a local guide in Chefchaouen?
You don't need one. The medina is small and easy to explore on your own. A local guide tells you the history of the town, founded in the 15th century, and takes you down streets you wouldn't find by yourself. We can book one at extra cost for the afternoon of the first day.
